The Essentials (Top 5)

Here are a few FAQ’s and tips we think you’ll find most helpful.

They’re wallet-sized for a reason. If you received a Circle Card, your wallet is a great home base.

If you’ve got a pack or two of cards, consider tucking a few in your bag, coat pocket, or glove box. You never know when a moment will strike.

Simply keeping a card on you, and glancing at it now and then, gently trains your awareness to notice more opportunities for kindness.

Look for the small moments that often go unspoken:

A gesture that lifted your day.

A kind act you almost forgot to thank.

A stranger’s smile when you needed it most.

Could a Circle Card be your way of saying thank you, showing appreciation, or simply saying “Hey, I see you”?

Watch for the unexpected.

The best moments can happen anywhere: a café, airport, trail, or street corner. Stay open.

  • Hand it to a stranger
  • Tuck it in a note
  • Leave it with a tip
  • Attach it to a small gift

You don’t need a big reason. Just keep it simple and sincere.

Both can!

Each Circle Card can have up to two tags (entries) per exchange—one from the person who receives it, and one from the person who passes it on next.

So if you receive a card, you can tag it twice—once when you get it, and again when you pass it on. If you’re giving out a brand-new card (like one you purchased), you’ll just make one entry as the giver.

Tagging a card connects it to you. It lets you follow its journey, see it in your dashboard (if you have an account), and get notified by email when it moves on.

There’s no script. As long as your reason is genuine, it will come through in the right spirit. We’ve honestly never seen a situation where it didn’t go well.

You could say something like:

“Hey, I just wanted to give you this. Thank you, I appreciate you.”

Or simply: “This is for you.”

If you’re unsure what to say or the moment catches you off guard, you can always add a lighthearted comment:

“This might seem a little silly (or weird), but I just wanted to give you this...”

Sometimes there's no need to say anything. Just hand them the card with a smile.

We recommend always holding the card so the front message is facing them. The back is theirs to discover.

It depends…

We usually don’t recommend explaining how it works unless you’re asked.

Why?

Too much explaining can make it feel transactional, like you want something. And that’s not what this is about. It can take away from the magic of the moment.

But...

if you already tagged the card with a note for them (which we recommend doing ahead of time if you can), it’s worth mentioning so they know to scan the card and read it.

Also, If you received the card from someone, sharing how you got it can make the moment feel more personal, especially if it’s already been on a journey.

So unless there’s a note you want them to find or a backstory to share, just show the front of the card with sincerity. Let them discover the rest on their own.

The Big Picture

Curious what this is really about? These questions explore the heart of the project.

They look like ordinary cards. They’re not.

Circle Cards are small, trackable pass-it-on cards for building a more kind, connected world. Each one carries a simple message on the front and a unique code on the back.

It’s a way of using technology to amplify human connection, not replace it.

When you give a card to someone, you tag it online with a note. The person you gave it to can enter the code to see the story behind it, and maybe they’ll pass it on with a note of their own.

As the card travels from person to person, it creates a living story. You can follow the journey or just let it go.

No one knows where it’ll end. That’s part of the magic.

Yes. There are currently two main categories of Circle Cards, each designed with a different intention.

Appreciation cards are for saying thank you, acknowledging someone, or sharing a moment of gratitude. Think of them as a new way to give ‘likes’ in the real (physical) world.

”Gift It Forward” cards come with a built-in mission. They’re given as part of a kind act you do for someone, and passed on as a token to gently encourage the recipient to pay it forward. It’s a way to spark a ripple of generosity.

All Circle Cards share the same spirit: creating meaningful moments of connection and growing a new culture of kindness rooted in generosity and appreciation.

Have an idea for a new card message, design, or even a whole new category? We’d love to hear it! Share your ideas in the form below 👇

Circle Cards are for people who believe in the power of kindness and want to:

  • Give real-world ‘likes’ 👍💗 that actually matter
  • Be the reason why someone smiles
  • Create moments that uplift and inspire
  • Do good and witness the ripple effect

They’re for anyone who wants to say “thank you,” or “I see you,” or “that mattered.”

They’re for individuals (maybe you!) and also for groups: schools, organizations, and other communities looking to spark real acts of appreciation and kindness.

They’re also a great way for parents to help kids experience the power of kindness firsthand. In a world where so much happens through screens, Circle Cards invite face-to-face moments that grow empathy, generosity, and gratitude.

They’re for everyone who wants to bring a little more light into the world.

Giving a Circle Card can feel just as good as receiving one.

  • It lifts your mood
  • It helps you say what matters
  • It deepens connection with friends and strangers
  • It reminds you to notice what’s already good
  • It brings out the part of you that’s kind and generous

And when your card gets tagged, you’ll see that something you did made a difference.

You don’t give a Circle Card to get something. Still, something often comes back.

Giving someone a Circle Card might make their day, and yours too.

You’ll feel more gratitude.

Showing appreciation for others and doing small acts of kindness reminds you of the good that’s already all around us.

You’ll feel lighter.

Small acts of kindness release feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, lifting your mood and your day. (Also: it feels amazing when someone smiles at you like you just brightened their day... because you did.)

You’ll speak up.

That compliment you meant to say? The appreciation you felt but held back? A Circle Card is like a permission slip. It gives you a nudge to say it. And you’ll likely get a genuine smile in return.

You’ll see with new eyes.

Keeping a Circle Card with you quietly trains your awareness. You may start noticing moments you once overlooked. Once you start looking for kindness, you’ll see it everywhere.

It may change you.

The habit of noticing and acting on moments of kindness grows within you. When you pass on a card, you’re not just spreading good vibes, you’re inviting them into your own life too.

Surprise updates!

Every time someone tags a card, you’ll be able to follow its journey and read the stories. When it gets tagged later, it’s like receiving a postcard from the future. A small reminder of something you set in motion.

Tagging a Card

Tagging a card (leaving a note) is how you add your moment to the story.

If you can spare a minute, it’s best to tag the card before you pass it on. That way, when the recipient looks up the code, they’ll see your note and it might inspire them to add their own.

If they scan it and there’s no entry yet, they may not think to scan it again. So a quick tag can make a real difference. That said, sometimes it’s just not possible to tag it beforehand.

Easy. Here are three ways to track it down:

1. Take a quick photo before passing it on.

Snap a pic of the back of the card.

Want to remember more details? Add a caption using the info button in your photo viewer (on both iPhones and Androids). No phone handy? Just jot down the code.

2. Check your email.

If you received the card from someone and made an entry as the receiver, you should have a copy of that entry in your inbox, including the full code.

3. Use your dashboard.

If you purchased the card, log in to your online dashboard to view all your cards. With a little detective work, you might figure out which one you gave away by:

  • Noticing which card number is missing
  • Check for new entries
  • See if someone recently looked up one of your cards

Share whatever feels meaningful to you!

Many people like to include a note of appreciation, a reflection on the moment, or even a simple thank-you message. You can also describe what happened—the interaction, the setting, or what moved you to pass the card on.

Not sure what to write? Just imagine the person you gave the card to (or got it from) reading your note. What might make it feel meaningful to them? What would you want them to feel?

Just a heads-up: your entry may be seen by others following the card’s journey. To keep things safe and respectful, please leave out private details like full names, addresses, or anything you wouldn’t want shared publicly.

Just your name and email.

That’s how we connect the card to you and send you updates as it travels. (You can opt out of notifications anytime.)

If you provide your last name, only your first name and last initial will appear in the public story entry.

Or, if you’d prefer to stay anonymous, just check the “post anonymously” box when tagging.

Usually less than 2 minutes, and often under 1 if you’re quick.

Only what you choose to share. You can post anonymously or with your first name. It’s totally up to you. If you enter your last name, we’ll only display your first name and last initial. Your email is never shown.

Anyone with the specific circle card code or a shared link can view the story. We may feature story entries on the website or social media, so avoid including any personal details you'd prefer not to share publicly.

For full details, check out our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

Nope—there’s no deadline.

You can leave a note weeks, months, or even years after you received it or passed it on.

A tag and an entry are the same thing. We use the words interchangeably.

When you tag a card, you’re creating a new entry that marks your part in its journey.

A note is the heart of that tag or entry. It’s what you choose to share about the moment.

All of the details you share, including your note, become part of the card’s evolving story, made up of all the entries from the people who’ve passed it on.

Passing It On

There’s no right way to give a Circle Card. Just a reason... and a little courage.

Anywhere you’ll have one handy for a spontaneous moment.

The best place is usually your wallet, right there with your other cards. A coat pocket or bag works great too.

The worst place?

A bedroom drawer you never open 🙂

You might feel a little awkward (or weird), and that’s okay. You’re handing a mysterious card to someone and probably saying something kind. It’s not exactly normal.

But most people don’t think, “That was weird.” They’re caught off guard, in the best possible way, and they remember it.

So, if handing someone a card to say, "Hey, you’re appreciated," feels a little uncomfortable at first, that’s normal.

You don’t need a perfect moment or perfect words. Just a little courage and a reason why. If you give someone a card in a genuine way, it always goes well!!

You might even say, “This may seem kind of weird, but…” which is disarming and works very well. Chances are, they’ll smile like you just made their whole day. Because maybe you did.

If you’ve read the previous FAQs, you’ll know we don't recommend explaining how the card works unless asked.

Here are three ways to inspire a tag:

1. Make it genuine.

When someone feels truly appreciated, they’re more likely to scan the card and tag it. A sincere reason for giving the card leaves a lasting impression.

2. Tell your story.

If you received the card from someone else, sharing how it came to you can make the moment feel more special. Your story might be the spark that inspires a tag.

3. Tag it and mention it.

If you added a note for them before passing it on (which we recommend doing), it’s worth saying so. When they scan the card and find it, they’re more likely to leave one of their own.

Not every card gets tagged and that’s okay. Passing on a card is a practice in letting go.

You may never know where it lands or who needed it most. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t matter. Sometimes a single moment is enough. You made someone smile, and maybe made their day. That’s the part you get to see, and that’s real.

And one day, when you least expect it, you might get a tag notification out of the blue.

Part of the magic is seeing whose lives it touches and how far it goes.

So while you can definitely hold on to it, they’re not meant to be souvenirs or collector’s items. They’re meant to travel.

Feel free to enjoy it for a while. And when the moment feels right, consider letting it go.

You’ll always have access to the shared digital story, so you’ll stay connected no matter how far it travels.

About the Cards

Circle Cards are made to be passed from hand to hand, over and over.

Each Circle Card is made from sturdy 30 mil PVC, the same thickness as a credit card.

With a high-end matte frosted finish that resists scratches, every card is built to last. They’re designed for durability, ready for pockets, backpacks, and all the places the journey takes them.

Just try not to leave one in the dryer. 😉

We’re mindful about materials and manufacturing. Circle Cards are made to be passed forward many times, which helps keep their environmental impact low.

We’re also actively exploring more eco-friendly printing options as the project grows.

The original Circle Cards are 2.5” (63.5 mm) in diameter and fit comfortably in most standard wallets.

That said, they may not fit in ultra-slim (minimalist) wallets or phone cases designed for standard card shapes.

If you use a slim wallet, or just prefer a traditional card size, our hybrid-shaped Circle Cards are a perfect fit. They have the same maximum dimensions as a credit card (3.37” x 2.125”), they’ll slide easily into any wallet or case.

Kids & Classrooms

For parents, teachers, and anyone helping kids grow into good humans.

Absolutely, and with a little help if they’re under 13.

Circle Cards are a simple and fun way for kids to practice kindness, express appreciation, and feel what it’s like to brighten someone’s day.

In a world of short attention spans, and where so much happens through screens, these cards create real-life moments that grow generosity, gratitude, and face-to-face connection.

For kids under 13, we follow the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), so they’ll need to use a parent or guardian’s email when tagging a card. You can read more in the “Privacy of Children” section in our Terms of Use.

Circle Cards offer meaningful benefits for kids, both in their emotional development and in how they engage with the world.

They encourage empathy, gratitude, mindfulness, and positive expression, while providing simple, real-life ways to connect with others.

Carrying a card helps kids notice small moments of kindness instead of focusing only on themselves.

And as they track the journey of their cards, they begin to see how even small actions can make a big impact.

Absolutely! Circle Cards can be a powerful tool for classrooms, youth groups, clubs, or anywhere kindness, gratitude, and real human connection are valued.

They offer a simple, low-pressure way to help kids and teens notice the good in each other, express appreciation, and experience the ripple effect of small acts of kindness.

Educators can use them as part of gratitude projects, kindness challenges, or simply as a spontaneous way to brighten someone’s day.

If your students are under 13, we recommend using a shared classroom email and guiding them through the tagging process. We follow COPPA guidelines to keep things safe. You can read more in the “Privacy of Children” section in our Terms of Use.

Our Journey

Sept. 26th, 2015

Mark, the founder, decides to approach hundreds of strangers at a large music festival in Georgia and ask for hugs. Yes, he knows this is a little weird.

And the response is so positive, he’s left wondering: How would hugging strangers go in the ‘real’ world? 🤔 For over six months, he works up the courage (and perhaps procrastinates a bit) to find out.

*Note: During one moment of the hug spree, someone hands Mark a pass-it-on card with an uplifting message about being awesome. He doesn’t remember the exact words because he passes it on, but he’ll never forget how it made him feel. This plants the seed for an idea that would eventually grow into something bigger.
